We really like pregnancy bolas as powerful motherhood symbol and a strong souvenir of the pregnancy and the birth of the baby.
It’s a lifetime jewel that highlights the strong infinite bond between a mother and her children.
Pregnancy Bolas can be bought by the mother herself or offered as a gift and give empowerment to the expecting mother.
As at The Mother Village, we are trying to change the mindset from the classic baby birth list to an empowering MUM list, the Pregnancy Bola is a perfect add on to a MUM list.
Origin & Meaning
The pregnancy bola was born in Indonesia, more particularly on the island of Bali as a jewel to celebrate pregnancy, traditionally known as “Bulan Bola” in Indonesian. Wearing a pregnancy bola was a way to announce the pregnancy and proudly decorate the new round belly.
The jewellery appeared later in Mexico and Latin America where it quickly took a new meaning : “harmony ball” or ” Llamador of ángeles ” (” angels callers ” in English) and was seen as a protective talisman to accompany pregnant women in their new adventure and bring good luck to the baby and his mom.
The pendant features a small ball with a bell which chimes as you move, the sound of which is thought to be calming for babies throughout pregnancy.
Is it effective for baby bonding or only a meaningful symbol ?
From about 18 weeks, your baby can start to hear your voice, heartbeat, and other sounds around you. It’s this early stage familiarity that helps you and your baby form a bond.
The bola is like a small cage that contains a copper ball in the centre. The jewel is held by a long cord or chain. When you move, the bola emits a harmonious subtle bell chime, said to calm and reassure your baby.
Typically, the cord of your bola should be easy to re-lengthen, so it can adapt to the different stages of your pregnancy, eventually resting on the stomach once you are eight or nine months.
Even after birth, when the baby hears the familiar chime of the bola necklace, it might help to settle them to sleep, as they remember the warmth and care of the womb.
You can continue to wear the bola in a shorter version so that it doesn’t interfere with your baby feeding, you can hang the Bola on your baby bed or stroller, or even sew the Bola in his blanket so that the sound accompanies him throughout his day.
There are no cons in having a Bola and it’s truly a beautiful symbol of your motherhood journey that you can keep after your pregnancy, re-use for your other pregnancies and even pass on to the next generations.
