The Rebozo is a traditional shawl woven and is used by traditional Mexican midwives, to do the manteada, a rocking massage technique, through pregnancy and birth.
We like the Rebozo massage as it’s a very holistic treatment that we find very useful in particular during the postpartum period.
It can also be called a “Closing the Bones” massage technique. The treatment lasts around 2h30 and involves two practitioners (4 hands massage), using a Mexican shawl that is used traditionally during pregnancy and after birth.
We recommend this intimate particular moment to mothers who enjoy spiritual treatments such as meditation, sophrology and yoga as you need to be able to really let go to deeply enjoy this special ritual.
Origin of the Rebozo Massage
In the Mexican tradition, young mothers were encouraged to stay in bed for 40 days after giving birth: a precious parenthesis dedicated to rest and meeting their baby, after which they got up to resume the course of their lives.
It was during this sometimes delicate transition period that the rebozo was lavished on them, an ancestral ritual which aims to refocus and reconnect with one’s body thanks to body tightening movements and a 4-hand massage.
The Rebozo Massage Experience
The Rebozo is a divine massage with 4 hands with gestures out of sync to increase the sensations during the treatment.
It consists of wrapping the hips, stomach, pelvis with the Rebozo fabric and performing a few movements to relieve the young mother of her postpartum pain.
The ritual consists of wrapping 7 important anchor points for relaxation: head, shoulders, stomach, pelvis, thighs, calves, feet.
This treatment takes place in three stages: first a massage with essential oils, followed by a wrap in the rebozo, and a steam bath with plants to finish.
In general, the treatment is also accompanied by herbal tea with detoxifying green plants to raise the body’s temperature to eliminate toxins.
Why we love the symbolic
The particular weaving of the shawl makes it both very solid and stretchy to adapt to the shape of the body and Mexican midwives have used it for centuries to help the tightening of the pelvis after birth.
This tightening movement gives new mothers a strong feeling of support and balance in their bodies.
The Rebozo differs from any other treatment by its holistic dimension, it’s not dispensed by a masseuse to a client, the symbol is that it is offered by two women to another woman.
It’s a physical, mental and spiritual treatment that will reposition the new mother’s pelvis but will also empower her in her new role as a mother.
It is also a ritual that encourages meditation and introspection, which is highly beneficial in the highly transformative time that is postpartum.
The Rebozo massage is great for postpartum and for pregnant women but not only. It is also intended for people who are going through a painful moment, an ordeal, physical or mental exhaustion. The rebozo treatment helps relieve these ailments. It can also do good during menopause. Clearly, it is for anyone who wants to regain their energy, do good and reposition their body.
